The third of our five-part Words to Live By (Divrei Chaim) Speaker Series will be on Monday, Jan. 21 from 7-9 p.m. in the Upper Division's AMCHA Judaic Library.
The Divrei Chaim, Hebrew for “words to live by,” serve as the foundation for our entire school community, including students, parents, and faculty. Our school's Divrei Chaim include kindness, integrity, curiosity, community, and purpose and form the basis for both character development as well as academic growth.
Each segment of the Words to Live By Speaker Series focuses on one of the Divrei Chaim, highlighting its value in today’s world as well as its connection to Denver JDS.
This third program will focus on “community” and features keynote speaker Michael Kay, head of school at Solomon Schechter School of Westchester, a K-12 school serving 783 students on two campuses outside New York City.
Dr. Kay holds an undergraduate degree in religion and history from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and Jewish studies from New York University, where he wrote his dissertation on leadership and community building in pluralistic Jewish high schools. Before coming to Schechter Westchester, he spent seven years at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School (CESJDS) in Rockville, Md., where he served as Upper School principal, Upper School director of Judaic studies, and a teacher of Bible and Jewish history. Prior to joining CESJDS, Dr. Kay taught at the New Atlanta Jewish Community High School (now the Weber School) and served as director of Camp Givah, a Jewish summer camp in upstate New York. In addition, he has extensive experience in adult Jewish education in Atlanta, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Dr. Kay is an alumnus of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship and the Day School Leadership Training Institute and a recipient of the Young Scholar Award from the Network for Research in Jewish Education. He and his wife Rachel have two children, a third grader and a kindergartner.
Future speaker series dates and topics include “integrity” on Mar. 4, and “kindness” on May 16.
